In the Britain, there are many sights, sounds and smells that cannot be seen in Japan. On the contrary, there are many things that can only be felt in Japan. So, I will introduce you to these things.

Sight

The first thing I would like to introduce is a scene that can only be seen in the Britain. It is Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, in the north of the Britain. The cityscape of Edinburgh is a World Heritage Site. Edinburgh Castle is the symbol of such a city. Edinburgh Castle stands on a rocky mountain called Castle Rock, and you can see it from all over the city. The castle looks impressive, but you can go inside and see the crown room and the chapel. In addition, this Edinburgh Castle is said to have become a model for Hogwarts Castle that appears in Harry Potter. You may discover various things when you go around Edinburgh Castle.

Next is sound that can only be heard in England. It is the sound of the Big Ben bell. Big Ben’s official name is Clock Tower and was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012. But even now, it is generally called Big Ben. Big Ben’s bell rings four times an hour. It is said that the sound of this bell was the basis of the chime sound of Japanese schools. But now, Big Ben is under repair work for four years. This repair work started in 2017. So we can hear the bell ringing in 2021.

Smell

The last thing we can feel only in the Britain is the smell. It is smell of English Bluebell. Bluebell is called the flower that tells the Britain about spring. It bloom from late April to late May. The forest where bluebells grow is called the “Bluebell Woods”, and the appearance of the entire forest dyed blue can be compared to a “Blue carpet”. Also said that fairies live there. I think it is especially in Kyoto that you can feel it. The temples in Kyoto that you can see while feeling the four seasons are very nice.

There is also a smell that can be felt in the four seasons. It is not only plant but also food. In Japan, there are dishes that match the four seasons. For example, you may want to eat somen noodles in summer or hot pot in the summer, right? What you want to eat depends on the season. This may be related to the four seasons of Japan. It may be unconscious, but I think it’s interesting when you think about it.
